We were invited to design a warm and contemporary space which would be different than a typical design practice in the city .

The client had bought a 4 bedroom bear shell apartment .They had a simple brief of having a warm and cozy interiors where the family can live together and celebrate .

The had this idea of making 3 bedroom and converting one bedroom into a multi purpose space which could be used for meditation , family parties , movie room or a lounge .

The house is set in an apartment building in central part of the city, surrounded by trees. The house is planned in a linear fashion and the orientation of house is such that it is flooded with natural light through the day.

The idea is to use a simple palette to enhance the existing quality proportions of the space and bring in a quality of meditativeness and calmness to it .

We have tried achieve a it by using deep colours, wooden textures, cultural artworks and different shapes. The overall composition tries to achieve a contemporary Indian space.

The big whit circle across the brick red wall becomes a focal point of the living room . It refers to a traditional Indian Teeka or Bindu. A bindu or a teeka is a coloured dot worn on the centre of the forehead originally by people of Indian subcontinent.

Bindu is considered the point at which creation begins and may become unity. It is also described as "the sacred symbol of the cosmos in its un-manifested state"

The bed space and the living space is separated by a courtyard which acts as informal gathering space. The courtyard and indoor is separated by seating space which is inspired from ‘indian ottas .‘Opportunity is created so as the user can use the space in multiple ways right from having a cup of coffee, reading a book , a quick afternoon nap or just an informal seating space .

Walkthrough

The house starts with a small lobby outside the elevator . As you enter there a 8 feet wide internal lobby before you get into the living room . One of the three bedroom which is the parents is attached to this lobby .

Next comes the living room and the dining area to the left of the lobby and the kitchen to the right side of it .

The living and the dining area is separated from the other two bedrooms by a terrace courtyard and a 4 feet wide passage next to it .

So as you move through the passage towards the other two bedrooms you have the terrace on your left and the multipurpose room to the right .

After reaching the end of the passage one can turn left to the children bed and master bed to the right side .

The master bed is internally connected to the multipurpose room.

The house is planned in a linear fashion is bonded together by a long connecting passage .

The colours are in shade and tints of Yellow , red and blue as they are very evidently seen in Indian context and one can easily relate to it .

The balance is achieved by subltle furniture colours , rugs and curtains , artworks .
